Our Story
This project has been inspired by the quiet feminism in my culture - women gifting and slipping each other gold, jewelry, and stones, just in case. As symbolic adornment, beauty, and spiritual tools but also a very practical life line for independence. South Asian women have been using gold and stones as protection for their daughters for 1000s of years - a quiet inheritance and a spiritual amulet. Charged with the energy of those who wore it before us. A feeling of family support, solidarity and a spirit of selflessness, should you ever need it.
At Sacred Sisters we are invoking the ethos of this sisterhood, this collective care and this love. Through our pieces we are creating a metaphorical red tent, and honoring the sacred capacity of women and birthing people to hold each other’s healing. Because our reproductive rights are under duress, with purchase of any piece in our collection, 11% of the profits are given to The Bridge Community Foundation, lovingly shepherded by the co-founder of Ashe Birthing Services, doulas supporting hundreds of BIPOC global majority families in NYC every year. Each piece is thoughtfully created with gemstones that support the peri and postnatal periods. Our stones and pieces are intentionally selected/created for their energetic, mythic and metaphysical properties such as, the balancing of hormones, encouraging fertility and nurturing pregnancy, birth and the postpartum period. They are balancing stones and metals to help guide you back to your-self and prepare you for the transformation and rites of passage ahead.
Sacred adornment that summons the village.
Our mission is to honor ancient gemstone properties, offering more than just push presents and baby shower gifts – we offer symbols of tradition, resilience, and solidarity. We hope to play a small and intimate part in redefining maternal care, celebrating women and birthing people, and acknowledge that it truly does take a village to uplift every mother and parent. Together, let's make a difference and pave the way for a brighter future of maternal health and well-being.
Founder's Story:
As a doula in NYC since 2020, I have been floored by what I have seen, the providers I’ve been surrounded by, the warriors giving birth in a system that doesn’t celebrate and nurture the inherent and natural capacity of the body and mind to birth.
Birth workers are working over time to try and make things safe and single handedly go to war with the system in every birth room. It’s powerfully unsustainable and frustrating. My goal is that Sacred Sisters can create a small scale pathway where we can really have each other’s backs. Part of each purchase goes forward to pay for someone's care and advocacy, in the form of a doula, lactation or midwife support/care from The Bridge Directory in NYC. The hope is that we can bridge the gap in birth support for those families that don't have the access. I've been part of their collective in 2022 and learning from them still, everyday.
After seeing birth and the violence of it in NYC - I am moved to bring the mystical and the sacred nature of birth back into US.
Also, I deal with PCOS and was having very irregular and violent bleeds. I decided to try to wear garnet, especially around when I should be having my cycle. I was so surprised to find that my cycle began to sort itself out, calm into flow, and find it's balance.
This was built with one of my best sister-friends, Kris, by my side. She is our photographer, editor and brand consultant extraordinaire. You can find her work at nowandlazer.com.
ps: all the pieces have been named after my sisters, blood and chosen. x Sohina
